About Research

Mathematics has a long history, and it continues to evolve as it interacts with other disciplines. At the Department of Mathematical Sciences, faculties conduct research on the frontiers of mathematical sciences, and students are introduced to the vast area of mathematics through the guidance of faculty members. A broad theory of mathematics has been developed through the ages by a number of mathematicians. The Department of Mathematical Sciences fulfills students' intellectual curiosity.

"Mathematical Sciences" means not only mathematics based on rigorous argument but also mathematics as a language that describes natural and social sciences and solves various practical problems. Over a four-year period, through lectures and seminar courses, students are exposed to a curriculum that covers from fundamentals of mathematics to its applications.

The most important thing is to think things through. It is sometimes necessary to perform calculations quickly and to know how to use theorems and formulas correctly. However, understanding new notions and their implications through an extensive process of trial and error is the most important aspect of learning mathematics. While some knowledge might become outdated, the ability to think logically and critically as a means to discover and solve problems (acquired from learning mathematics) will never become out of date. The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers students an opportunity to enjoy the limitless areas of pure and applied mathematics and provides them a place in the university for developing their careers.
